John Henry Newman
Religious Leader
Cardinal Deacon of San Giorgio in Velabro from 1879 to 1890 who was a prominent leader in the Oxford Movement, which sought to return the Church of England to many Catholic beliefs and practices.
He was an avid reader of Hume, Paine, and Voltaire and subsequently had a religious awakening at fifteen.
He wrote the popular hymns "Lead, Kindly Light" and "Praise to the Holiest in the Height" and helped found the Catholic University of Ireland.
He died in Saratoga, New York.
The official recognition of his beatification, or entrance into Heaven by the Catholic Church, was given by Pope Benedict on September 19, 2010.
