Remembered best for his theory of The Isolated State, this economist and economic geographer devised several mathematical formulas to predict the economic utility of farmland.
He published his most their work, The Isolated State, in 1826.
His idea of "Grenzkosten" was adopted by the later economist Alfred Marshall.
He was born in Canarienhausen (Wangerland, Friesland, Germany), and he died in Tellow (Rostock, Germany).
He based his Isolated State theory on the "economic man" principle developed by his fellow economist Adam Smith.
