He traveled to the Vendome Theatre in Chicago to see Louis Armstrong play.
He first sang with clarinet and saxophone player Jimmie Noone.
He first married Lemma and, after their divorce in 1958, he remarried Jillean Hughes Dath.
He grew up listening to the works of Duke Ellington.
