Best known for founding the successful Jim Russell Racing Driver School.
He served in the Royal Air Force in World War II.
He began racing when he was 32, but seven years later a crash in Le Mans ended his racing career.
He married Jennifer Russell in 1965. He died after undergoing an operation for a hip replacement.
He trained many successful drivers, including Emerson Fittipaldi and Tiff Needell.
