U.S. Senator from Vermont from 1989 to 2007, who became an Independent in 2001 after spending his career as a Republican. He also serve in the US House of Representatives from 1975 to 1989.
He obtained a law degree from Harvard Law School after getting his undergraduate degree from Yale.
He was one of 23 senators to vote against authorizing the use of military force in Iraq in 2002.
His wife, Elizabeth Daley, died in 2007.
He was one of only two Republicans to vote against confirming Clarence Thomas to the Supreme Court.
