Second African-American to serve on the Supreme Court. He was a firm believer in the constructionist view of the U.S. Constitution.
He was released from military duty because he failed his medical exam.
He was almost prevented from being on the Supreme Court because of allegations of sexual harassment made by attorney Anita Hill.
He married Kathy Ambush, but the coupled divorced in 1984. He then married Virginia Lamp three years later.
He was nominated by President George Bush in 1991 to fill the Supreme Court seat formerly held by Thurgood Marshall.
