He played baseball at McClymonds High School in California.
He was the first sprinter to officially run the 100 meters in less than 10 seconds, clocking in at 9.95 in 1968.
He was born in Dumas, Arkansas but grew up in Oakland, California.
His 100-meter record stood for several years until Calvin Smith ran a 9.93 in 1983.
