6-time MLB All-Star who was traded in 1971 for a prospect named Nolan Ryan. He spent the bulk of his career with the Los Angeles and California Angels but also played for the New York Mets, Texas Rangers and Pittsburgh Pirates.
His father, who was a semi-professional player, coached his little-league team.
Several years after Los Angeles traded him, he returned to coach the team.
His parents, Archie and Margaret, ran a grocery store that afforded him a comfortable middle class childhood.
Gene Autry owned the Angels when he coached them from 1978 to '81.
