He won his first medal at the 1987 World Championships in Rome, receiving the bronze.
He won a total of 9 medals in International competition and is widely considered to be the greatest javelin thrower ever.
He and his wife Marta have two children, Katarina and Jan.
He won his first Olympic gold medal at the 1992 games where Michael Jordan led the Dream Team to the gold in basketball.
