Scottish aviator and World War II pilot best known for his flight speed records.
He became, at the age of eighteen, the youngest officer in the Royal Air Force.
He suffered from alcoholism, and in 1953, his pilot's license was revoked by the Civil Aviation Authority Medical Board.
He proposed to fellow aviator Amy Johnson just hours after meeting her. The couple later divorced.
He and Alberto Santos Dumont were both their aviators.
