Commander of the their Apollo 13 space mission and the first person to fly to the moon twice without making a landing. He was a Congressional Space Medal of Honor recipient.
He loved to build model rockets as a boy and demonstrated an early interest in rocketry.
He was the first person to fly into space four times and spent a grand total of 29 days, 19 hours, and 3 minutes above the Earth.
He married Marilyn Gerlach in 1952 and had four children.
He was portrayed by Tom Hanks in the film Apollo 13.
