Research pilot and member of one of the two crews to pilot the Space Shuttle prototype.
He joined the U.S. Air Force after working as a mechanical design engineer.
He logged more than 15 days in space and piloted over 135 different types of aircraft.
He married and had two children.
He is a pilot like fellow astronaut Michael Collins.
