Best known for Take Me Out to the Ball Game, Shine On, Harvest Moon, and numerous other Tin Pan Alley hits.
He performed in vaudeville. He didn't actually see a baseball game until 1940 in spite of the fact that he had written the game's titular song in 1908.
He was posthumously inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1970.
He was the son of Theodore Christian, an organ builder and choir director at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Philadelphia, and Louisa Knauff.
He and frequent collaborator Nora Bayes married in 1908, but divorced in 1913. They wrote Shine On, Harvest Moon together.
