Entrepreneur known for co-founding and heading the Old World Weavers textile company, this business executive designed and restored the interior of the White House in accordance with the wishes of several different United States presidents.
After studying art and art history at New York University and the University of Wisconsin, she worked for the Women's Wear Daily fashion magazine.
Her designs and legendary fashion styles were showcased in a 2005 exhibition at The Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute.
She co-founded Old World Weavers with her husband Carl Apfel.
She and fashion designer Miuccia Prada both made The Guardian's 2013 list of best dressed people over 50 years old.
