Famous for leading the mid-1990s scientific group that created a cloned sheep named Dolly from an adult sheep's somatic cell, he taught at the University of Edinburgh's MRC Centre for Regenerative Medicine and was knighted in 2008 for his groundbreaking scientific work.

After earning his undergraduate degree in Agriculture from the University of Nottingham, he received his doctorate in Cryobiology from the University of Cambridge.
