Originally founded as Pittsburgh Academy, the school was named Western University of Pennsylvania for nearly 100 years before becoming the University of Pittsburgh in 1908.
Trivia
The first polio vaccine was developed by Dr. Jonas Salk at the university's research labs in the 1950s.
