He studied at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.
He won the Pulitzer Prize in 1926 for his book Life of Sir William Osler.
He came from three generations of doctors, and his brother was a prominent practitioner.
The Russian physiologist Ivan Pavlov visited Cushing's laboratory at Johns Hopkins once.
