American Democratic politician who served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1953 to 1957 and the Senate from 1959 to 1982.
He attended Georgetown University, but left to serve in active duty in the U.S. Naval Reserve in 1941.
He was convicted of taking bribes during the Abscam sting operation in 1981 and was forced to resign from Congress.
He was born in Plainfield, New Jersey and passed away in Denville, New Jersey at St. Clare's Hospital in 2001.
He petitioned U.S. President Bill Clinton for a pardon, but his petition was denied.
