Jazz guitarist who collaborated with bop and jazz artists like Sarah Vaughan, James Moody, and Donald Byrd.
He started out as a drummer in high school, but switched to piano on the advice of another noted pianist, Phineas Newborn, Jr.
He came from the hometown of other jazz legends, like saxophonist George Coleman and trumpeter Booker Little.
He grew up in Memphis, Tennessee.
He worked with Miles Davis in 1963.
