Jazz and blues trumpeter whose successful album "Free Form" was released in 1962. Had a profound impact on Herbie Hancock's career and artistry.
He studied music at Wayne State University and went on to receive his Master's degree from the Manhattan School of Music.
He recorded the album "Love Byrd" with one of his North Carolina Central University students.
He was born in Detroit, Michigan, and died in Dover, Delaware, at the age of eighty.
He once collaborated with Thelonious Monk.
