She made her mark in TV news as an on-air legal analyst for CNN during O.J. Simpson's 1994 murder trial, and became the target of a bidding war between CNN and Fox.
On Fox News she covered high-profile trials, like those of Scott Peterson and Michael Jackson, as well as covering the Virginia Tech massacre.
She married John P. Coale in 1979. Her sister Lise Van Susteren was a well-known psychologist in Washington, D.C.
She came on board with Fox News at the same time as Fox correspondent Paula Zahn jumped from Fox to CNN.
