Concert performer who was a master of French piano music and an expert on Gabriel Fauré's repertoire, recording his complete piano works.
His talents were discovered at age five by a teacher who was one of his family's neighbors. He was only 28 when he came in first at the Concours International.
He was the Cleveland Institute of Music's director from 1974 until 1985.
He married composer Helen Taylor in 1943, and following her death, cellist Zara Nelsova in 1963.
He had many well-known teachers, including Roger Sessions.
