Latvian comic book artist who was the co-creator of the modern day versions of the superheroes Green Lantern and the Atom for DC Comics during his career span from the 1940s through the 1990s.
He went to Manhattan's School of Industrial Art but left in his senior year to work for MLJ Comics.
He received the 1971, 1972, and 1975 National Cartoonists Society Awards.
He was born to a Jewish family in Latvia and they emigrated to the United States when he was a baby in 1929.
He had a longtime professional relationship with editor Julius Schwartz.
