He took over the family business--a bistro--when his father died unexpectedly. He went on to open his own restaurant in Crissier, Switzerland, in 1971.
He published his cookbook, The Cuisine of Fredy Girardet, in 1984.
He grew up in Lausanne, Switzerland.
He and Joel Robuchon became culinary contemporaries.
