Best known for Baby, It's Cold Outside, A Bushel and a Peck, and Luck Be a Lady. He was a prominent figure on Broadway and Tin Pan Alley.
He attended City College of New York in spite of the fact that he didn't have a high school diploma.
He won Tony Awards for his work as a composer and lyricist on the Broadway musicals Guys and Dolls and How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. He also won a Pulitzer Prize for Drama for How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying and for Baby, It's Cold Outside, he won an Academy Award.
He married second wife Jo Sullivan Loesser in 1959. They had one child together.
He based Guys and Dolls on the stories of Damon Runyon.
