One of Britain's most popular DJ's, he co-hosted the Mark and Lard show for 14 years, and then later hosted The Folk Show and Mark Radcliffe's Music Club.
He played drums for the band Skrewdriver before starting his broadcasting career in Manchester.
He wrote the autobiographical book Showbusiness: The Diary Of A Rock 'N' Roll Nobody, which detailed his failed attempts at music stardom.
His first grandchild was born in October 2008.
His Mark and Lard show hosted sessions by acclaimed underground musicians like Nick Cave.
