Russian sculptor regarded as the best of the 18th century. He sculpted a marble statue of Catherine II, completed in 1790.
He joined the Imperial Academy of Arts, where his instructor Nicolas-François Gillet was impressed with his work.
He designed 58 medallions representing all the Russian sovereigns.
He was born into a poor family in Russia.
He made a bust of Tsar Alexander I that is housed at Monitcello, the home of Thomas Jefferson.
