Social worker who was the founder of the Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee (BRAC) in 1972.
He broke tradition by studying Naval Architecture at the University of Glasgow.
He was given the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Community Leadership in 1980.
He was born into a well-off Hasan family in Baniachong, British India.
He won the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 1980, two years before fellow Bangladeshi Muhammad Yunus would win the same honor.
