He studied history at Eureka College and received a doctorate in theology from Yale Divinity School.
He appeared at many festivals and on local and national talk shows during the 1960s and 1970s, scheduling all performances according to his church responsibilities.
His mother Elizabeth jumpstarted his piano studies when he was five. His uncle Robert Wade was a pianist for the New York and San Francisco ballet companies.
He experienced the music of Art Tatum when he was 12 and made jazz his genre of choice from then on.
