Elmo R. Zumwalt
War Hero
Chief of Naval Operations who ordered the spraying of Agent Orange in Vietnam.
He forced the Navy to liberalize, removing, for example, the ban on beards and long hair.
He eventually learned of Agent Orange's toxic effects and tried unsuccessfully to keep his son and others out of harm's way.
His son was exposed to Agent Orange in Vietnam and developed severe health problems as a result.
He and John Kerry both commanded Swift Boats in Vietnam.
