Considered one of the 20th century's greatest piano pedagogues and interpreters of traditional Germanic repertoire.
He studied music at the Stern Conservatory in Berlin with Martin Krause instructing.
He was interested in recreating music from the Baroque and Classical eras in as historically accurate a fashion as possible.
His father was an oboe player with the Municipal Orchestra in Basel and played viola for an amateur string quartet.
He took Artur Schnabel's place at the Berlin Hochschule für Musik after Schnabel left Nazi Germany.
