Jazz artist who was called "the first girl ever to play bebop piano" by Leonard Feather.
She cut her attendance at the New England Conservatory of Music short because it was difficult to keep up her studies while maintaining a full-time performing schedule.
She received the Mary Lou Williams Women in Jazz award, as well as a Lifetime Achievement Award.
Her first husband was Joe Shulman, a member of her trio, who died at the age of 33 because of a heart attack. She had a daughter by her second husband, former bandleader Bert Block.
She toured with Kris Kristofferson and Rita Coolidge in 1978.
