Edwin Cameron
Supreme Court Justice
Justice of the Constitutional Court of South Africa known for his proactive stances on human rights issues. He is the first senior office holder in South Africa to openly admit to being HIV-positive.
He was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship and served as a human rights lawyer during the era of apartheid.
He is the author of several acclaimed books, including Defiant Desire – Gay and Lesbian Lives in South Africa and his memoir, Witness to AIDS.
His father is Scottish and his mother is an Afrikaner.
He was appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court of Appeal by South African President Thabo Mbeki in 2000.
