One of the greatest chess masters of the Soviet era who defeated many great and well known masters and who, during his peak, was ranked the 16th best player in the world.
He played in his first chess tournament when he was 17 years old.
He defeated the legendary Boris Spassky among others.
He was born and raised in Ukraine, which was part of the Soviet Union but after it's fall, he emigrated to the United States.
He was known for his ability to outplay other chess greats including Boris Spassky.
