He was the first person to win gold medals in separate events at both the summer and winter Olympics: in light-heavyweight boxing in 1920, and in the four-man bobsled in 1932.
He was a gifted student, and studied law at both Harvard and Oxford before his athletic career.
After his Olympic days, he served for his country in World War II.
He was born in Denver, Colorado.
He joined Gillis Grafstrom as the only people to win gold medals in the summer and winter Olympics, but since Grafstrom earned both in the same event, he kept his own record.
