Dewitt Clinton
Politician
Politician who served as 6th Governor of New York from 1817 to 1822 and was re-elected to serve as 8th Governor of New York from 1825 to 1828. He had previously served in the U.S. Senate from 1802 to 1803.
He attended King's College (later Columbia University) and served in the New York State Assembly and the New York Senate. He also served three terms as Mayor of New York City.
Eighteen cities in thirteen different states were named for him.
He was married to Maria Franklin, the mother of his ten children, from 1796 until her death in 1818. He later married Catharine Jones.
Like George Washington, he was a freemason.
