Republican politician who served as the 21st Governor of New Jersey from 1866 to 1869. He also spent time as the chairman of the Republican National Committee.
He was a philanthropist and businessman.
Behind the Newark Museum is a memorial plaque dedicated to him.
His ancestors helped to found Newark in 1666.
He worked with President Abraham Lincoln in passing the Thirteenth amendment to abolish slavery.
