He wrestled at Cal State Fullerton and Arizona State University.
He became the last Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Champion and also the last Welterweight and Middleweight Champion of Pride Fighting Championships.
He had three children with his first wife Alison. In 2014 he married Rachel Malter.
He lost to Rashad Evans via split decision on June 15, 2013 in the main event at UFC 161.
