One of the first black and female trumpeters in a major American band, Sly and the Family Stone.
She was born and raised in Sacramento, California.
She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
She had two daughters, one who went on to perform spoken word and the other focusing on rapping and singing.
She and Sly Stone were bandmates until 1975 in Sly and the Family Stone, and they continued to collaborate after the band's dissolution.
