Blues and jazz pianist of the 1940s who pioneered the Kansas City Sound.
He began as a Kansas City pianist in the style of Fats Waller.
He discovered the seventeen year old Charlie Parker in a local club and hired him to play the background on several of his hits.
He had three daughters with wife Thelma Adams.
His band helped launch the careers of Charlie Parker and Ben Webster.
