English actress who is known for playing the role of Vera Brittain in the BBC television drama Testament of Youth in 1979. She received several Best Actress awards for this role including a British Academy Television Award.
She studied at the London Academy of Dramatic Art and started performing at the Palace Theatre.
She was twice a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company.
She grew up the daughter of an airline pilot in St. Albans, Hertfordshire.
She starred opposite Bob Hoskins in the television series Pennies from Heaven in 1978.
