Modernist poet known for The Maximus Poems and The Distances, among other works. His poetic work greatly influenced the literary development of such writers as Robert Duncan, Denise Levertov, and Paul Blackburn.
He attended Harvard University and Wesleyan University.
In Call Me Ishmael, he offered an analysis of Herman Melville's their novel Moby Dick.
He and his wife, Constance Wilcock, had one daughter.
He was influenced by the work of Ezra Pound.
