Poet and children's author best known for Returning to Earth, a Pulitzer Prize-nominated work. His other publications include Fury of Motion: Poems for Boys and Tickle Day: Poems from Father Goose.
He attended Florida State University and Florida Atlantic University.
He created a children's television series called Cabbages and Kings for the Alabama Educational Television station.
He was born in New York, and he grew up primarily in Florida. He married Nancy Minnicks in 1967 and later had a daughter named Julie Ann.
He was influenced by the work of John Updike.
