He was a stubborn, artistically-inclined child who dropped out of school on multiple occasions.
He died at twenty-seven of an unknown illness. Biographers have speculated that his affliction was syphilis, tuberculosis, or typhus.
His parents divorced, but Anwar's father continued to financially support the poet and his mother.
He, like Sapardi Djoko Damono , was one of Indonesia's most successful poets.
