Sapardi Djoko Damono
Poet
Indonesian lyric poet, academic, and translator who became known for Perahu Kertas (Paper Boat) and other works.
He studied literature at Gajah Mada University and later joined the faculty at the University of Indonesia.
His poetry inspired multiple Indonesian musical compositions, including work by pianist Ananda Sukarlan.
He and his younger sibling organized a makeshift library in their hometown of Surakarta when they were still children.
He received much acclaim for his translation of Ernest Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea.
