Bruce Cumings
Teacher
Author, University of Chicago professor, and East Asian history specialist. He received the American Historical Association's prestigious John K. Fairbank Prize.
After studying psychology at Denison University, he traveled to Korea as a member of the Peace Corps. He later earned advanced degrees from Columbia University and Indiana University.
He wrote on such topics as the Korean War, East Asian industrialization, and North Korean isolation.
His second marriage -- to University of Virginia administrator Meredith Jung-En Woo -- produced two children.
While on the history faculty at the University of Chicago, he earned the title of Gustavus Swift and Ann M. Swift Distinguished Professor.
