English marathon runner and founder of the PowerBar company, which manufactured energy and nutritional products.
He graduated in 1975 from UC Berkeley and was a member of the university's track team.
He was the world's third-highest ranked marathoner in 1977, according to Track and Field News, despite having a heart condition.
He grew up in Toronto with his family. He fathered five children. His daughter Julia was the top female finisher at the Dipsea course in 2009 at the age of 13.
He and Gregory Peck were both alumni of UC Berkeley.
