Bradford Washburn
Explorer
Legendary mountaineer who surveyed, measured, and photographed some of the world's highest peaks.
He completed his first successful climb at age 11 on New Hampshire's 6,200-foot Mount Washingon. By age 16, he conquered the Matterhorn and Mont Blanc.
He photographed some mountain peaks from the doorway of his small airplane, and climbed up other peaks with his 53-pound camera.
His wife, Barbara Washburn, was the first woman to climb the Denali peak. They had three children and nine grandchildren together.
Years after mountaineers like Sir Edmund Hillary climbed Everest, he led a surveying expedition to determine exactly how high up the peak was.
