He started out as a lyricist in Tin Pan Alley, where he wrote The Coffee Song, his first success, when he was 28.
He was posthumously inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1983.
He married Jacqueline Dalya.
He worked with Jule Styne, Mort Garson, Carl Sigman, and Burt Bacharach.
