Arthur Rimbaud
Poet
French symbolist and decadent poet who is remembered for such works as Le Soleil Etait Encore Chaud and Une Saison en Enfer. His later works include Illuminations and Lettres.
After studying with a tutor who encouraged him to write poetry, he published his first poem in 1870.
He died of bone cancer at the young age of thirty-seven.
His brief affair with author Paul Verlaine ended when Verlaine bought a gun and fired shots at Rimbaud.
Victor Hugo compared Rimbaud's work to that of William Shakespeare.
